Who referred you to the game?: The voices in my head.
Character Name: The Commander (aka Commander Badass)
Canon source: Manly Guys Doing Manly Things
Personality:
The Commander is, by all accounts, one of the manliest men to ever live, however he has a more down to Earth perspective than many of his ilk. He's quiet about himself unless asked, a surprisingly unassuming sort of guy, and he lives by a philosophy of confidence and conviction that he credits to Marlon Brando (who is considered a religious icon in the future he comes from).
The plan goes that if you just act confident and give things your all you won't NEED to work hard at making others acknowledge your masculinity, and this attitude shows in the way the Commander handles his job and his life in general. Though undeniably macho in appearance and capability he comes off as a very normal guy, genial and relaxed, openly affectionate with his two children and passionate about his work. Despite his extreme and fascinating life's escapades he isn't boastful and in fact seems to dislike talking about himself.
Although he clearly has a thorough understanding of the mindset of more unstable members of his uber-manly staff - such as God of War's Kratos - he is past the point of doing things like flying into a rage at the slightest provocation. He is, as he would put it, a functioning member of society, and considers the most important part of his job to be the rehabilitation of the manly men in his employ that have a problem with the 'un-macho' parts of day to day life. He is an excellent mediator and a father-like figure to many of his employees with an admitted soft spot for kids and troubled individuals in general.
The Commander enjoys hobbies like video games, tabletop rpgs, pool, cards and any and all contact sports.
History:
Not that much is known about the Commander's history except that he is a commanding officer of the Navy TIALS (Time Air Land and Sea) who were commissioned by the US Government in the future. There are only a handful of platoons of these 'super soldiers' who were sent all over in time to do things such as going back to punch Hitler and fight in Nam and such. (They were also jazzed up and marketed as action figures at one point, something the Commander is rather unimpressed with.) He has been all over in his world's timeline and has encountered himself in the time stream multiple times without causing any collapsing of the universe. For example he went back to win the war in Vietnam and then was sent back in time AGAIN to sabotage himself because an Earth without the Rambo movies was too horrifying to comprehend.
Because he was created artificially (synthesized from - in his words - 'nothin' but American soil an' triple A steak') the Commander has no biological parents or normal given name. His employees and friends just call him 'Commander' (Though his full official title is technically Commander Badass). He was married for some number of years more than 5 and less than 10 - time travel is complicated - to his now ex-wife Madeline with whom he has a civil and relatively friendly relationship. They have two young children, June and Sammy, aged approximately 4 and 2 who the Commander sees frequently.
As a commissioned officer of TIALS he's been living and working as the head of a temp agency for ludicrously macho men in the 21st century for at least as long as his marriage so probably 10-15 years. He prefers this era for several reasons such as 'remaining Earth wilderness' and everything not being 'so chrome'.
His staff is made up of all kinds of rough and tough men from many different shows/games/movies whom he has spent the last chunk of his life helping to find their way back into normal lives after their stints in various media are finished and they need to get regular jobs.
Strengths: The Commander is a tall, broad, STRONG man, a skilled hand to hand combatant, and an expert with all kinds of weapons (current and future). It's likely that he has conversational skills, or at least basic essential vocabulary, in a few languages (German, Vietnamese etc). As a member of the Navy TIALS he is an experienced time-traveler and comes from a universe which seems to assume an only slightly malleable time-line. All his conflicting actions seem to result in a stable time loop (ala Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban).
[Because he's being universally displaced at TPH and he can't mess up the existing game timeline I would like to augment his time travel abilities - which are gifted by a wrist cuff computer. It is basically always on him and given future tech and how dangerous such a thing would be in the wrong hands it's probably got a biometric lock on it and can only be used by him. If he can keep it I'd like to assume that he can't travel further back than his arrival in this universe and he can't go any further forward that 24 hours from current time. I'll continue to work with the rules of his universe which assume that a stable time loop should be formed by most of his actions.]
Weaknesses:
The Commander has an admitted soft spot for children - he sees his own kids in other young people and probably wouldn't be able to harm a child unless they were SERIOUSLY causing havoc. He firmly believes that people can change and be rehabilitated after traumatic events and is rarely willing to give up on people even when they're violent monstrous jackasses. He can probably be taken advantage of to a point by such people for these reasons. He is created to be especially hardy but is still only human and vulnerable to all human damages. He can take a lot of damage before dropping but would still be easy for most meta humans to hurt or kill.
Preferred drop-in point: Manhattan please.
What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment? Making bros of all the manliest men in town, being mentor-ey at all the teenage boys that think they have to prove themselves as men, missing his kids, probably volunteering his skills to the Anti-Posthumans effort, and generally being, well, badass.
First Person Journal Sample:
[A broad-chested grumpy looking man in a red and black jacket is frowning at the camera. He has night vision goggles on his head, a noticeable five o'clock shadow, and a cigar tucked into the corner of his mouth which he plucks out so he can speak clearly. His nose looks like it's been broken and reset a couple-dozen times and he's sporting a nasty bruise on one side of his face.]
This little trip is bringin' on some flashbacks I really could've done without. Ya gotta be kiddin' me with this magic tattoo thing right?
[He sighs, rubbing the bridge of his nose in the manner of a man fighting off a truly excruciating headache.]
I ain't exactly a stranger to hoppin' around time but dimensional displacement is a whole other kettle a' fish. Anybody want to fill me in on the details or am I on my own out here?
Third Person Sample:
The Commander shucked his boots at the door, sighing as he dropped his jacket onto its hook. It had been a long frustrating day pounding the pavement, getting doors shut in his face for that matter. You could only look so normal being the sort of guy he was and the people around here had a ferocious sense of fear and distaste for anyone 'imported'. He hadn't quite nailed how to get his foot in the door in this job market and it would be a lie to say that that didn't peeve him. Taking something he was usually great at and making it next to impossible was a sure way to make him grouchy.
His small apartment in the bins was the kind of place he hadn't lived since basic training and as homey as it was in that nostalgic sort of regard coming back to it each day only served to remind him how different this place was from the life he had left at home.
The tiny apartment had no place for his friends, for his children.. He missed June and Sammy like a physical ache, missed the yelling and fighting of his coworkers, even Duke's bad jokes, even Jared's whining... hell he was even starting to miss Canadian Guy.
Sinking into a chair by the window his stretched out and pulled the phone off his belt, flicking through the network posts he'd missed in the last few hours.
It was Friday night, like hell was he going to stay in and let this sulking mood get to him. Maybe somebody else around here would be up for some beers and a game of pool.
